Here are a few reminders that will help us get off to a great start this year. More detailed information can be found in the Milan Music Department Handbook.

Your instrument should be in your locker or in its assigned spot in the band room. Make sure that it is clearly marked with your name. Each day, you MUST bring your instrument, accessories, a pencil, and your method book to class. A lock on your case, especially for percussionists, is strongly recommended. Percussionists should also make sure that each part of their equipment is marked with your last name. If you are new to band, please make sure that you return the information form for Mr. Cote so you and your family can be included in our fitting appointments. This is a performance based class: you are required to contribute to the group on a DAILY basis, so having your instrument with you (or using a substitute if your instrument is in the shop) will be a regular part of your assessment this year.

Method book you will need this year:

6th grade, Tradition of Excellence Book 1 (RED Cover)

7th grade, Tradition of Excellence Book 2 (BLUE Cover)

8th grade, Tradition of Excellence Book 3 (GREEN Cover)

At the start of the year, bring LAST year's book with you to band.

You can order this book through Collins’ Center in downtown Milan or by calling Marshall Music at 800-221-1755. 6th graders, Mr. Cote will have this book available for you at your fitting appointment later this month.

Food is NOT permitted in the band room. This includes gum, which is a health hazard in band. You can have a sealed, non-spillable water bottle.

    Grades at MMS:

All grades are assessed using the state of Michigan instrumental music power standards. Students may continue to reassess throughout the semester by recording prior to the start of first hour (7:30-7:45) or by submitting audio recordings to

7th and 8th grade students will wear Milan Middle School band polos, available to order in early October. Polos are worn with black pants/skirt, black socks, and black shoes. 6th graders are asked to wear dressy clothing in school colors (black or red).
