Pre Labor Day Start to School Year

Hello Milan Community,

Milan Area Schools is considering a Pre Labor Day start for the school year. After consulting the Board of Education and MAS staff members, the district began to pursue the idea. Because numerous districts in the county were also interested in starting before Labor Day, the Washtenaw County Superintendent's association asked the WISD to file for a county-wide waiver.

If/when the county receives the waiver, districts could use the approval to start before Labor Day, although districts would not be required to do so. The decision to start before Labor Day (made possible by the impending WISD waiver) is still a local decision for each district.

The MDE waiver process requires a public hearing on the matter. Below is link to the flyer announcing that hearing. Community members from Milan can attend the hearing. While I will not be hosting the meeting, I will be present to address questions specific to Milan.

If/when the WISD receives the waiver, each district will determine their calendar for 2020-2021. Based on Milan’s preliminary calculations, the 2020-2021 school year would start on August 31, 2020.

While this decision can not be finalized until after an MDE waiver is acquired, I thought it was important to let you know of the possible start date for the 2020-2021 school year. Please plan accordingly.

Thank You,
Bryan Girbach
