Process to Close School

At Milan Area Schools, the safety of our students and staff is always the top priority when making the decision to close school. Michigan law allows schools to close for severe weather, building issues, and other emergencies outside the district’s control. Most of our closures are due to winter weather or facility issues.

For weather-related closures, district staff begin driving roads as early as 4:00 AM to assess conditions, especially on rural and dirt roads that make up much of our 89-square-mile district. We also monitor weather forecasts and consult with neighboring districts. While main roads may look clear, back roads can often remain hazardous for buses and drivers.

We understand that closures can disrupt family routines. When possible, decisions are made the night before, but many times they must be made in the early morning. We aim to notify families no later than 5:45 AM.

Notifications are shared through:

  1. Our website
  2. Local news media

  3. District social media

  4. Calls, texts, and emails via our notification system

The State of Michigan allows for up to six days of emergency closures each year. If we exceed that number, make-up days are added to the end of the school year. Please keep this in mind when planning vacations in June.

While every effort is made to make the safest decision for all students, parents and guardians always have the option to make a different choice for their child if they feel conditions are unsafe.
