Commitment to Literacy

At Milan Area Schools, we believe that literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning. The ability to read, write, speak, and listen with confidence opens doors for students both in and beyond the classroom. We are committed to building strong readers by providing high-quality instruction, early support, and meaningful collaboration with families.

In alignment with Michigan’s updated K–12 Literacy and Dyslexia Law, our district has strengthened our efforts to ensure every student receives the instruction and support they need to become confident readers. This includes:

  • Early screening in grades K–3 to identify students who may need extra support

  • Evidence-based reading instruction rooted in the science of reading

  • Individual Reading Improvement Plans (IRIPs) for students who need targeted support

  • Professional development for teachers on effective literacy strategies, including how to support students with dyslexia

These efforts build on the foundation established by Michigan’s Read by Grade Three law, while expanding support for students at all grade levels. Our goal is to ensure that all students—regardless of background or learning style—can thrive as readers.

If you have questions about your child’s reading development or the literacy supports available in our district, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or building principal.

We also recognize the important role families play in a child’s literacy journey. Below are helpful resources for supporting reading at home:
