Welcome to Algebra
Welcome: This year, students will be further developing their algebra foundations in order to prepare them for high school geometry and beyond. Successful completion of this course will earn the student high school credit for Algebra 1.
School Supplies: Please bring to class, everyday:
- a pencil
- a red, spiral, 1-subject notebook
- their Math folder
Learning: Our units are designed to meet the Common Core State Standards for Algebra 1 that can be found at the Common Core State State Standards Initative website.
Solving Linear Equations - Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning.
Solving Linear Inequalities - Solve equations and inequalities in one variable.
Graphing Linear Functions - Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically.
Writing Linear Functions - Create equations that describe numbers or relationships.
Solving Systems of Linear Equations - Solve systems of equations.
Exponential Functions and Sequences -Extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents. Use properties of rational and irrational numbers.
Polynomial Equations and Factoring -Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials.
Graphing Quadratic Functions - Graph quadratic functions and show intercepts, maxima, and minima.
Solving Quadratic Equations - Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
Radical Functions and Equations - Graph square root, cube root, and piecewise-defined functions, including step functions and absolute value functions. Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.
Data Analysis and Displays - Summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable.
In Class Assignments/Labs: In class, Power Teaching Math structure means that students work mostly as a team, though there will be some time to work independently. All of that work will go into the student's red spiral notebook.
Homework: Homework assignments are designed to help you practice, review, or extend upon what we have learned in class. Regular homework assignments will be due according to the schedule laid out in class and in the online planner. Parents: the "Guide on the Side" is a useful tool to help you ask questions about what is going on in class and what they are thinking as they work.
Late Work: Under MMS policy, a student who wants to "re-do" an assignment to demonstrate improved understanding must show that they have completed all of the assigned homework for that standard. Please talk to Mrs. Barker for more details.
Absent Work: Students are expected to make up all in-class work when they miss class.
Assessments: Assessments may take the form of quizzes, tests, projects, etc. and are designed to ensure that students have reached proficiency (Level 3) on the Algebra 1 standards. Any assessment may be redone if the student did not completely master the goals of the unit, but they must complete the MMS Standards Re-Assessment Ticket.
Retakes: Students may retake assessments at any time during the semester, as long as they have completed the procedures laid out on the Standards Re-Assessment Ticket and all of the homework related to that standard. Let Mrs. Barker know which test is to be retaken and request a lunch pass. All retakes must be done during before or after school, by appointment.
Grading: Students' report card grades will be determined by their proficiency on the standards identified for Algebra 1.
Rubrics for the standards will use the following scale: 4 = Advanced, 3 = Proficient, 2 = Partially Proficient, and 1 = Not Proficient
Grade Reports: Students and parents have online access to grades at the PowerSchool Parent Login website. The ID and password are located on the schedule passed out at registration in August.
Please use PowerSchool regularly to keep track of student grades and avoid having any missing assignments.
Math Help: If you need extra help, you may request an appointment with Mrs. Barker before school, during lunch, or after school.
